The honest truth

Your trustees know the website needs replacing. The quotes you've seen are why it hasn't happened.

You sat in that meeting. The agency quote came in at £6,000 plus ongoing fees. The treasurer looked concerned. The chair asked whether it could wait another year. Everyone agreed, gently, that it probably could.

That was twelve months ago. The donation button still doesn't really work on a phone. The "latest news" page hasn't been updated since the trustee who knew the CMS stepped down. And nobody wants to put it back on the agenda.

What trustees tell us

Quiet endorsements from the people who had to sign it off.

"Honestly, the thing that won the board over was the 30-day exit. Once that was on the page, the conversation lasted about ten minutes."

Chair of trustees

Regional youth charity

"I'd been told to expect a £6,000 redevelopment. Coming back to the board with a £79-a-month line, no upfront cost, was the easiest budget paper I've ever written."

Honorary treasurer

Community arts charity

"They didn't talk to us like we were difficult. They understood why a small charity can't sign a 24-month contract and built around that. Refreshing."

Why we started Common Good

Two people. Twenty-plus years in the charity sector. One shared frustration.

Carl is a trusted UK charity finance and digital transformation specialist. Duncan has spent his career in charity digital and marketing - campaigns, donor journeys, the messy reality of the sector.

We kept seeing the same thing: small charities priced out of decent digital, then sold cheap templated rubbish, then locked into expensive support contracts. Common Good Digital is what we wish existed for our own clients.

Questions trustees ask

The honest answers, before you even ask.

If your board meeting throws up a question we haven't covered, email us and we'll answer it in writing - and add it here.

What happens if we're not happy?

You can leave any month with 30 days' notice - no exit fee, no clawback, no "but you got the build for free." If you cancel in the first 90 days, we'll keep your site live for 30 more days at no cost while you arrange alternatives, and hand over all your content in a usable format.

Who actually owns the website?

You do. Your domain, your content, your design assets, your donor data - all yours from day one and yours when you leave. We don't hold anything hostage. We'll transfer everything to your next provider if it ever comes to that.

What if you go out of business?

Honest answer: every supplier is a risk. Two things help. First, your site runs on standard, widely-supported technology - any competent developer can pick it up. Second, you own your content and domain, so you can move at any time. We'll also publish a contingency note in your contract explaining exactly what happens if we wind down.

Are there hidden costs or add-ons?

No. £79/month at the Pioneer rate (or £99/month standard) covers hosting, SSL, daily backups, security, unlimited content updates, donation and Gift Aid setup, and the quarterly review. You'll never get an invoice for "a small tweak" or "a plugin update."

How is this so much cheaper than the agencies who quoted us?

We don't have a sales team, fancy offices, or account managers between you and the people doing the work. We only work with charities, so we're efficient in building high quality charity websites. And we're funded by monthly revenue, not a big upfront fee - which is why the build is free and our customer service is so good - because we want to support you for years to come.

What about GDPR, accessibility and Gift Aid?

Hosted on UK servers, GDPR-compliant by default, accessible to older visitors, slow connections and screen-reader users. Donation flows are tested for Gift Aid declarations and integrate with Stripe, GoCardless and JustGiving. We can sign your data processing agreement.

Will trustees need to learn a content management system?

No. You email us the change you want - a new trustee, an updated impact figure, a fresh news post - and we make it. Same day for small things, within 48 hours for anything bigger. It's included.

How long does it take from signing to going live?

Four weeks for most charities. Week 1 we agree the structure and show you a real design. Weeks 2–3 we build, you review. Week 4 we migrate, redirect your old URLs, and launch. Your first month is free.

What if our needs change - bigger site, more pages, an event microsite?

Talk to us. Most growth is included. For anything genuinely larger (e.g. a dedicated campaign site), we'll quote a fair one-off cost before any work starts. The monthly fee doesn't go up because you've grown.

Will our website look like every other charity site you've built?

No. Every site gets a custom design built around your charity's identity - your colours, typography, photography and tone of voice. We start from your brand and the story you want to tell, not a template. The shared foundations are technical (hosting, accessibility, donation flows, security) - the design on top is yours alone.

Can you build for communities with specific accessibility needs?

Yes. Every site meets WCAG 2.2 AA as standard, but we go further when your community needs it - larger type and high-contrast modes for sight-loss charities, plain-English and easy-read versions for learning-disability charities, screen-reader-first navigation, keyboard-only journeys, captioned video, and translations or right-to-left layouts where relevant. Tell us who your visitors are and we'll design around them.

How do you make sure our mission comes across clearly?

Before any design work, we spend time understanding what you do, who you help and why it matters. We'll help you shape the homepage message, the supporter journey and the impact stories so a first-time visitor understands your mission within seconds. If you don't have the words yet, we'll draft them with you - no jargon, no charity-speak.
